Jake Kramar
Family Service Coordinator

Jake has been a member of the staff since 2016. He and his wife Stephanie live in West Salem, where they enjoy numerous outdoor activities, from snowshoeing and hiking to multi-day kayak trips. If he’s not on an adventure, you can usually find him next to one of his multiple grills cooking up something delicious.

His journey into this career sparked as he arranged his grandfather’s funeral in 2014. The emotional toll of that whole experience was so eye-opening that Jake reached out for a more in-depth perspective regarding service preplanning from a good friend in the profession.

Jake was immediately intrigued, so when an opportunity to join the Schumacher-Kish staff came up, he jumped at the opportunity. Jake’s new position opens a door to genuinely helping people by making a long-term positive difference in their lives. “Knowing that I am helping families potentially avoid unnecessary stress is very rewarding.”

Former Owner (1935 - 1986)

In 1935, Donald E. Kish Jr. was born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. Growing up, Don's family lived near a funeral home, which sparked Don's initial interest in the profession and to own a funeral home.

During the Korean War, Don took a sabbatical from pursuing a career in the funeral home industry, to serve as a US Navy electrician on board a submarine. Finished with military service, Don attended both the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. After graduating from The Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee, with an associate degree in mortuary science, Don worked at funeral homes in Lodi and New Lisbon, Wisconsin.

In May 1963, Don became a funeral director at the Schumacher Funeral Home in La Crosse. In May 1973, Don purchased the Schumacher Funeral Home, which became the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home.

In July 1980, Don built another funeral home in La Crescent, Minnesota. In February 1984, the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home was built at its current location on West Avenue in La Crosse. In 1995, Schumacher-Kish acquired its third location in Onalaska, Wisconsin, which is now the home of a new cremation facility.

Don served as a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association and the Western District of Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association. Active in the La Crosse community, Don was a past president and past vice president of the District Association. As a US Navy veteran, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse, the Southside Businessman's Association, The Greater La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce, the La Crosse Optimists, The Viterbo College Presidents Club and was a member of Mount Calvary Church. Previously, Don served as a board member of the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and as a board member, past treasurer, and past vice president of the La Crosse Boys and Girls Club, where he became one of the first five people to be inducted into that club's wall of fame.

Don passed away on May 9, 1986. His oldest son Steve had taken over ownership and operations of the funeral homes, and two years later Don’s youngest son Scott joined the firm. Today, a third generation of the Kish family, Scott’s son Alex and son-in-law Zach, are continuing Don’s commitment of compassionate and caring service to all the families they serve.
