Howard Eugene Meyer, 90 of La Crescent, MN., passed away on January 25, 2023. After leaving La Crescent in 2015, he resided at Eagle Crest South in La Crosse, WI where he enjoyed the friendships of the other residents and recently the many nurses and caregivers.
Howard, one of five children, was born in Caledonia, MN., on February 1,1932 to Edwin and Gladys Meyer. Howie helped on the family farm until he left home at age 16 to be a farm hand in Gibbon, MN. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve in LaCrosse, but soon requested active duty and was stationed in San Diego where he trained in radio operations. Howie set out for Japan, Korea and Hong Kong on a ship carrying beach landing craft. He was a part of the final landing of the Korean War in 1953. When he returned home, he went to work driving semi for Briggs Transportation and later P.I.E. and continued that career for the next 35 years.
Howie’s patriotism was extremely important to him. He was active in the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 in La Crescent where he held the Post Commander position from 2003 - 2004. He enjoyed volunteering at MN Boys State and representing the Legion by marching in various parades.
Howie married Mary Klug of Caledonia in 1955. They made a life together in La Crescent until Mary’s death in 2013. They enjoyed the simple life of working hard in their garden, selling raspberries, hunting for morel mushrooms, camping and boating, and enjoying the company of their grandchildren. Howie also enjoyed trout fishing and hunting.
Howie is survived by son, Michael (Lucida) Meyer, their children Lindsey (Nick) Glasow and Jake (Stacy) Meyer and their children, Michaela and Tristan Glasow and Beckett and Blair Meyer; daughter Renee (Kevin) Leidel, their children Erich (Tiffany) and Mitch (Kristin) Leidel, and their children Samuel, Isaac and Aiyla Leidel, and Ilse, Tegan, and Halle Leidel; a special friend, Lillian Kletzke; and brother, Douglas Meyer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and siblings, Dorothy Pengra, Gordon Meyer and Barbara Shockly.
We would like to express a thank you to the staff at Eagle Crest South and St. Croix Hospice for their gentle and excellent care.
A private service and burial will be held with immediate family. Friends and family are welcome to join in a celebration of life to be held on Saturday, April 29th from 1 until 4pm at the St. Andrews Square Event Center, 1501 St. Andrews St., La Crosse WI. 54603
