Donald J. Meyer, 85, of Onalaska, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
He was born in West Salem, WI, on January 27, 1937, to Erwin and Sarah (Tompkins) Meyer. Don grew up in West Salem and, as a young man, took a trip to Illinois with his brothers, Wayne and Ronald. He ended up staying in Illinois and starting his family.
Don worked for McGraw-Edison in Algonquin, IL, for several years, then owned and operated a Mobil Gas Station in Fox River Grove, IL for a few years. Eventually, Don started in the carpet business, operating Meyer’s Carpet in Cary, IL, and working as a carpet installer for other carpet companies for many years. In his free time, he loved to be out fishing, doing handy work around the house, or going shopping, and especially loved spending time with family and friends. Later in life, Don moved back to the area, residing in Onalaska.
Don is survived by his children, Jeff Meyer of McHenry, IL, Jeanne (Gary) Clark of Woodstock, IL, Tom (Michelle) Meyer of Johnsburg, IL, and Julie (Ernie) Dimas of Avondale, AZ; eleven grandchildren, Michael and Hannah Meyer, Andrew Clark and Becky (Kevin) Bruning, Madison and Marissa Meyer, Aliya, Aiden and Ari James, and Rachel and Nate Dimas; one sister, Charlotte Botcher of West Salem; his twin brother, Ronald (Marilyn) Meyer of West Salem; nieces, nephews and other extended family; and his long-time companion, Bonnie Clements. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Bryan; and two brothers, Maynard and Wayne Meyer.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 4 th , at North Presbyterian Church, 1327 N. Salem Rd., in La Crosse, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate. Burial will take place in the Neshonoc Cemetery, West Salem.
