Victor (Vic) Johnson died at his home on October 9, 2018 from Myelomonocytic Leukemia (MML). Vic was born on September 6, 1939 to Frank J. and Bernice (Unnasch) Johnson, the second of four children. The farm he grew up on was on the Winona/Houston County border with land in both counties. The house was in Houston County, Mound Prairie Township.
Vic attended school grades 1-6 at the Mill School (a one-room school house in rural Houston County with grades 1-8 and one teacher that closed in the spring of 1951). He attended school in LaCrescent for grades 7-8 and grades 9-10 in Winona, and grades 11-12 at La Crosse Central. He graduated from La Crosse Central in the class of “57”. There is a song that says the class of “57” had class.
Vic graduated from UW – LaCrosse in 1961 with a degree in Chemistry. He then worked in a Mayo Clinic lab for two years where he met the love of his live, Judith Peterson. They married on December 1, 1962.
After working two years as a chemist for Fiberite in Winona, he returned to school to obtain a teaching degree. He graduated from Winona State University in 1966 with a M.S. degree in Chemistry Education . He then taught science classes, mostly chemistry and biochemistry, at Winona High School for 32 years. He retired in 1998 under the Rule of 90.
Returning to his roots. He and Judith purchased a farm in 1968 where they had a small beef herd. They liquidated the farming operation in 2001 but remained on the farm. He enjoyed riding his Kawasaki mule on the trails he had built.
In 2002 he joined New Hartford Town Board and was head supervisor the last three years of service.
He is survived by his wife Judith Johnson; his son Craig (Toni) Johnson; his granddaughter Victoria Johnson; and his siblings Lois (Jim) Morcomb, Ben (Joyce) Johnson, and Richard (Linda) Johnson. He is preceded in death by his mother and father.
