Theo “Grammi” Jeanine Curtis Abnet, 86, of Onalaska, passed away January 3, 2025, at Gundersen (Emplify) Health System in La Crosse. She is preceded in death by her husband Ken Abnet, her parents Clifford and Myrtle Curtis, sister Sally Schober, infant/young brothers and sisters David, Lynn, Lee Brian, and Leslie Curtis, and brothers and sisters in-laws George and Marcela Abnet, Joe and Arlene Ready, Howard and Marion Kappauf.
Theo is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Thomas) Grapes of La Crosse; son, Paul (Amy) Abnet of Dakota; grandchildren, Amy (Roman) Wells of Holmen, Brynn Panek of Fond du lac, Elise and Jessalyn Abnet of Winona; great-grandchildren, William and Presleigh Panek & Jaxsyn, Torynn and Briela Wells. She is also survived by her sister, Peggy (Russell) Opland of Onalaska, brother, Peter (Cindy) Curtis of Holmen, and brothers-in-law Doug Schober Sr. of La Crosse and Jerry Abnet of La Crescent, along with many nieces and nephews.
Theo was a life-time member of the La Crosse Eagles Auxiliary for 53 years. She served many local, state and international positions throughout her tenure including President, Secretary, Treasurer and ritual teams. In June 2014 she received the 10-Year State Secretary Certificate of the Ladies Auxiliary and in 2010 was inducted into the Wisconsin Eagles Hall of Fame. She received a State President’s Citation from the Wisconsin State Aerie recognizing her as Grandmother of the Year for 2006-2007. She received the State Madam President’s Citation Progress of Auxiliary Award in 2008, and a Distinguished Service Citation from the Grand Auxiliary for Meritorious Accomplishments in 2003. To say her service and work with the Auxiliary was part of her life is an understatement!
A special thank you to the nursing, physician and Palliative Care staff at Gundersen who took such great care of our mom during her illness. Your empathy and kindness will be remembered always.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 10, 2025, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Avenue So. La Crosse, with Pastor Joanne Richmond officiating. Entombment will follow in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, January 9, 2025, and again from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Friday. A Memorial Service will be performed by the La Crosse Eagles Auxiliary beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service.
