Suzann M. Beckman

October 26, 1937 — November 28, 2023

Suzann M (Hjelming) Beckman, 86, of La Crescent, MN passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023 with family by her side. Suzann was born in Caledonia, MN on October 26, 1937, to Lawrence and Stella Hjellming.

Suzann was united in marriage to William “Bill” Beckman on September 17, 1955.  They later divorced but remained close friends, enjoying trips and gambling together.

She resided in La Crescent for many years after different moves during her life. She always had very fond memories of adventures with friends when she lived in Caledonia, MN.

Suzann worked for the La Crescent Healthcare Center as a dietary aide on and off for numerous years and retired in August 2006. She enjoyed her brief times away to offer loving care when the newest bundle of joy was born into the family. Then as grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, they held very special places in her heart.

She loved calls, visits, and letter writing to keep in touch. She kept the tradition alive from her mom Stella. When you visited you were always offered many food and drink options. She loved every moment with family, great conversations, lunches, and playing video tablets.

She had a positive mindset during her life experiences. It is that mindset, her grace and dignity that helped her battle Leukemia for the past eleven months. She truly appreciated the health support from the Infusion Center at Mayo La Crosse, WI. A special thank you goes out to all the staff who offered such wonderful care for our mom.

Suzann is survived by her children, Linda Bratager of La Crescent, Todd Beckman of La Crescent, Brenda Beckman (Dan Hundorf) of Caledonia, MN, Bonnie (Alan) Paulson of La Crescent, DeAnna (Nate) Maertens of California, and Angela Beckman (Lucas Heineman) of Holcombe, WI; five grandchildren, Melissa (John) Schraedley of Manchester, CT, Nathan Bratager of La Crescent, and Grant, Alina and Simon Maertens California; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Alex Schraedley; a sister in law, Ila of Florida, nieces and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Arnold Hjellming.

“Some people just make you feel better when you're around them. They are sunshine to your soul and medicine for your mind.” This was our mom.

A private family service commemorating Suzann’s life will be held at a later date.
