Steven Walter Stuhr passed away surrounded by his family, February 6th, 2024, at Lakeview Health Center in West Salem, Wisconsin, after a long battle with Alzheimers. He filled his 73 years with an abundance of family, fun and rocks.
Steve was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin on November 19th, 1950, to Walter and Jean (Exley) Stuhr. As a boy, Steve was smitten with nature, from hunting and fishing with his brother, Bill, to collecting rocks. His passion for the outdoors was a driving force in his life-so much so that after graduating from Onalaska High School, he went on to earn a Master of Science Degree in Geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
After college, his work led him to a small mining town in Northern Wisconsin where he met and fell in love with his future wife, Deanna. After exchanging vows during a snowstorm on December 29, 1973, Steve and Deanna spent the next 50 years loving each other while raising three beautiful, caring daughters; Monica, Amy and Beth. They moved back to the area where Steve worked as a geologist for Mathy Construction for 31 years, until retiring to perfect his hunting and fishing skills.
To his friends, Steve was known as "Stu." He had a close-knit group of buddies he connected with in high school. Their families enjoyed countless gatherings at Badger football games, the La Crosse Rotary Lights display, holiday parties and random nights of food and beverages. To his friends, he was the life of the party. Because of Steve, his friends had endless entertainment every single time they were together.
Steve loved his family. He adored the women in his life. Because of Steve, his family has a genuine understanding of affection, devotion, and respect. When he wasn't showing his wife off to his friends, planning the next family adventure, or shooting hoops in the driveway with the kids, he was known as the dad behind the camera. He documented everything-holidays, family vacations and endless hours of sporting events featuring his girls. Because of Steve, his daughters have amazing video memories of their entire childhood.
Steve is survived by his wife Deanna (Zanella) Stuhr, daughters Monica Mauel (Kevin), Amy Smith (Jerod), and Beth Stuhr (Kayla), grandchildren; Devon, Jazmyn, Liz, Landon, Evelyn, Walter, and Frances, his brothers Bill (Deb) and Scott Stuhr, his sisters Vicki Hartigan (Michael), Tina Stuhr and Betty Tulley, and too many nieces and nephews to count.
We would like to thank our family and friends for their love and support and the staff at Lakeview Health Center for their abundance of care and compassion for Steve during his stay with them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org , or any local charity you are passionate about.
Please join us for an afternoon of memories and laughter where we honor Stu and his amazing life. His Celebration of Life will be held on March 1st, from 3-7pm, hosted by the family at Celebrations on the River (2100 Dawson Avenue, La Crosse, WI 54603).
