Stanley Allen Johnson

January 18, 1952 — May 13, 2022

Stanley Allen Johnson, 70, of La Crescent, passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, May 13, 2022.

Stan was born in Caledonia, MN, on January 18, 1952, to Leonard and Melpha (Rauk) Johnson.  He grew up in Caledonia and was a 1970 graduate of Caledonia High School.  He went on to attend Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN, and was drafted into the U.S. Army after his third year.  He proudly served a two-year tour overseas in Germany.  During his service, Stan returned to Minnesota to marry Donna Lange on June 23, 1973, at Crucifixion Parish in La Crescent.

Following his discharge from the Army, Stan and Donna made their home in La Crescent.  Stan worked for Peter Nelson & Son for several years then spent most of his career with Interstate Roofing until his retirement.  He was a long-time active member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent where he served two terms as Post Commander and served on the Color Guard for many years.  Stan was also a leading “chicken man” for over 30 years, assisting with many Legion Chicken-Qs over the years. When Stan was not busy volunteering his services, he enjoyed hunting, golfing, snowmobiling, and diligent duties to his and others’ lawn care. He was always willing to take on challenges to help his friends, family, and community.

Stan’s devotion to family had no limits. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Some examples of this include rides for the grandkids on the John Deere Tractor, dropping everything to help out with a project, attending sporting events, helping his children move (a lot), building/fixing things, and countless hog roasts. In 1989, Stan and Donna doubled the size of their family to take in two nieces and one nephew.  So many of us have been humbled by his selflessness, and though he will be terribly missed, we will all strive to honor Papa Stan’s legacy.

Stan is survived by his beloved wife, Donna; his children and grandchildren, Toni Feran (Mark) of Hokah and their children, Riley, Brandon, Isabel, Genia, Lucas, Carson, Ashtyn, and Parker, Jeremy Johnson (Nicole) of Hokah, and their children, Lauren, Leyton, and Lucas, Anthony Johnson (Emily) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Michelle Hendrickson (Jared) of French Island, and their children, Jax, Julia, and Myles; his siblings, Marilyn Johnson (Terry) of Red Wing, MN, Richard Johnson of Westby, WI, and Barb Lorenz (Gary) of Hokah; and several nieces and nephews.  Stan was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 20 th , at the Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Rev. John L. Evans, II, will officiate.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in Crucifixion Cemetery.
