Simon Charles Freitag was born on August 20, 2003. He was charismatic from the start. Simon had the best dimpled smile that lit up his whole face and his mom’s heart. He never grew out of being a picky eater. Some of you may remember the mayonnaise bread phase. Not that this is surprising, but Simon was talking in full sentences before the age of one. And really hasn’t stopped talking since. Every adult who had the privilege of conversing with him came away astounded at the deep level with which he knew things. Everyone who was privileged to know Simon also knew he was black and white. There was no gray area with him. He was SO, SO passionate: about America, Germany (literally called Germans, “his people”), WWII history, fishing, hunting turkeys, all Right-Wing politics, the Military, mac and cheese with ketchup, The Lord, blue Mountain Dew, all forms of sour candy, his family, guns, gun rights, his Grandpa, watching movies with his mom, saying “I Love You” before hanging up every phone call or leaving the house, German music, science, reading the Bible alone and with his mom, playing video games, nerf wars (literally treated it as actual war), air-soft wars, Pleasoning, protecting his sisters (he could upset them but nobody else could), vanilla ice cream, military warcraft, sharing TikTok videos with Ryan, trick-or-treating with Grandma Mary, his snake Amelia, all animals especially his cat, Tom and so many other things.
Simon accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at five years old at home with his mom. He had prophetic visions throughout his life and loved praying for others. He was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease June 2015 and struggled to understand why it had to be him. He already struggled with Autism and sometimes depression. He prayed so many times to be healed and couldn’t understand why it didn’t happen. We hope he knows now.
When he talked with his mom about Heaven, he couldn’t wait to ask so many questions and spend time with Grandma Mary and his favorite Bible characters: Jesus, Sampson, Jonah, and Noah. Thank God that in Heaven, a thousand years is as one day because Simon has a lot to talk about.
Simon loved fiercely. His greatest gift to people was his love and deep compassion. His greatest accomplishment (in his words) was graduating high school this past May. His greatest love was his mom. Those who knew him were blessed and so, so lucky.
This past summer, he and Ryan were talking about how they would want to die if it happened (again, deep conversations with Simon). Simon said that he just wanted to pass away peacefully in his sleep. They also talked about whether they wanted to be buried or cremated. Simon said, “Dude I want to be cremated! I don’t want my body and casket floating down damn Bourbon Street like during Hurricane Katrina!” It is hard to see any good in this whatsoever, yet God honored Simon’s desire and took him home, while sleeping, December 30, 2022. His unique, quirky, sweet, compassionate, and fiery soul will be SO deeply missed by us who had the absolute honor of being in his short life.
