Shirley Ann Thompson

Shirley Ann Thompson, 88 of La Crescent MN, died Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at home with family.

She was born June 11, 1933, in Westby Wis. to Melvin and Goldie (Stinson) Burke.

Shirley was a 1951 graduate of Westby high school. Shirley work all through high school at the Westby movie theater and grew her love for theater and the movies. She worked at Tri-State Breeders Cooperative from 1951 through 1955.
Shirley married Lewis A. Thompson on April 10, 1954, and they have lived in La Crescent, Minn. for 53 years.
Shirley was a stay-at-home Mom raising five children. She volunteered in the community where she was involved with kid’s activities including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA, and church.
She was a member at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and involved with WELCA and Lydia circle. Shirley through Lydia circle supported church bazaars, lefsa bakes and funeral lunches. She was also involved with the Quilters group and helped make 100’s of quilts for donation. Shirley’s most notable role was with the annual Applefest Pie baking fundraiser for over 39 years. She co-chaired the fundraiser as well, as supported sales and production of over 18,000 pies. Her love for baking did not stop with the church, she loved to bake for family, friends and especially during the holidays.

Shirley was also an original member of the La Crescent American Legion Auxiliary and Marching unit for 30 years ending in 2006. She enjoyed supporting the Legion as well as representing the La Crescent Auxiliary throughout the Midwest. She was also well known as the Northrop-King seed service Representative for many years and enjoyed working with several retail outlets.
Survivors include children, Scott (Carol) Thompson, West Salem, Wi., Joy (Larry) Johnson of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Judy (Bill) Olson of Holmen, Wi., Todd Thompson of Holmen, Wi., Brent (Leah) Thompson Woodbury Minn,.; eleven grandchildren, Kristin (Dan) Thompson-Lerberg, Kendra (Doug) Braucher, Karly (Jerad) Baganz, Cassandra (Brice) Newman, Carissa (Cody) Weihe , Troy (Mariah) Olson,
Anna (Justin) Jotham, Nik (Nikki) Thompson, Sophia Thompson, Jack Thompson, Sidney Thompson; and twelve great grandchildren; siblings, Edward (Mary) Burke, Westby Wi., Janet ( Raymond) Vangan, Monona Iowa, Jerry (Kay) Burke, Westby Wi., Charlene Vangan, La Crosse Wi. She was preceded in death by husband, Lewis Thompson; sister Elaine Lunde of Westby Wi.; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 30 th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent with Rev. Kent Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in Coon Prairie Cemetery, rural Westby. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the services. Memorials are suggested to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or Sugar Creek Bible Camp.
