Sharyn Kay Schoening

December 19, 1962 — June 17, 2017

Sharyn Kay Schoening, 54, of La Crescent passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones early Saturday morning, June 17, 2017, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, following a 16-month battle with cancer.

She was born December 19, 1962, in La Crosse to Dick and Marilyn (Nida) Smith. She graduated from Logan High School in 1981. On March 2, 2012 she married Bill Schoening. Her whole career she loved helping others with all their banking and homeowner needs. She was currently employed by Wieser Law office in La Crescent.

Sharyn was grateful and proud of every moment and day of her life, from her youth in La Crosse, to her time in La Crescent and everything in between. She showed us how to live and love life and was deeply committed to her faith, family, friends, and community. In her younger years she has many memories spent camping with the Smith clan and watching her father play ball. Sharyn grew to have a love for playing ball herself. Her girls remember going to watch their mom play in tournaments and created many memories on the ball field. Sharyn absolutely loved the outdoors; working in her yard, deer hunting, snowmobiling, and cruising in her pontoon. She enjoyed traveling out West, along the North Shore, and snowmobiling up North. Sharyn was an active member of the La Crescent snowmobile club.

Sharyn always greeted you with a smile and lit up every room she walked into. She was full of inspiration with a heart of gold. She was the most giving and caring person. At Christmas time, one of her favorite traditions was baking dozens of cookies to deliver to others she cared about. Her biggest blessings were her two daughters and her six beautiful grandchildren, “her little birds”.

Sharyn is survived by her husband Bill; daughters Meghan (Andy) Von Arx of Hokah, Ashley (Rob) Johnson of La Crescent, step-son Skyllar Schoening of Roseau, MN, and six beautiful grandchildren Mariah, Owen, and Lucas Von Arx and Avery, Graycin, and Josie Kay Johnson. Brothers Rick (Sharon) Smith of La Crosse, Brian (Laurie) Smith of La Crosse, Dan (Deb) Smith of Cashton, WI, and sister Kari (Art) Rodriguez of Sparta, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Dick & Marilyn Smith and an infant brother Christen.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, La Crescent. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral & Cremation Services of La Crescent and from 10am-11am before the service on Friday. The family would like to thank the Sarcoma team of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, the nurses and doctors at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, and all of our family and friends for your help and prayers they are much appreciated at this difficult time.

Mom, it’s so hard to let you go, but take our love with you and be at peace. We thank you for all that you were and will continue to be to us!

She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain; she’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above; hear her whisper words of love. You’ll be together before long, until then listen for her song.
