Sharon Fae Miller (85) of Onalaska, WI passed away peacefully on October 31st, 2024 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Sharon was born on January 20th, 1939 to Orris & Eva-Mae Fisher in La Crosse, WI and graduated as a valedictorian from Melrose High School in 1957. She married Gene Fisher in 1959. They were later divorced. She married Gerald “Jerry” Miller in 1979 and enjoyed 41 years of marriage until Jerry’s passing in 2020.
Sharon worked her entire career as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service (Onalaska branch), retiring in 1992 after 30 years of dedicated service.
She will be remembered for being colorful, quick-witted and high-spirited. She lived a full life by helping others in need and rescuing animals of all kinds (dogs, cats, squirrels, rabbits, and even a monkey). She always had a slice of cheese in her purse for dogs she encountered. She enjoyed telling fantastical tales around the campfire of the “whampus cat,” a tradition that got passed down to generations of children. Sharon also enjoyed finding treasures at “the rummage sale,” gardening, birdwatching, baking, traveling, fishing and hunting.
She is survived by her son, Gary Fisher of Onalaska, WI; her brother, Theron (Ann) Fisher of Onalaska; her stepsons Anthony “Tony” (Vicki) Miller of La Crosse; Rick (Kris) Miller of Onalaska; Steven “Steve” Miller of Berryville, VA; Daniel “Dan” (Eileen) Miller of Raleigh, NC; niece Julie (Chris) Haas of Onalaska; several grandchildren and nieces; and many other relatives and close friends.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald Miller; son, Bradley Fisher; stepson, Michael Miller; ex-husband, Gene Fisher; special friend, Don Vinger; and many other relatives and close friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring hospice providers at Mayo Clinic Health System, the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living in Onalaska, and special friend and neighbor, Betsy (Justin) McGrath.
Sharon will have a graveside service at the Onalaska City Cemetery on Friday November 8th, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. Following the service, a lunch will be served at the Onalaska American Legion Post 336.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sharon’s honor to the Coulee Region Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
