Rev. Oscar Trygve Holter, 87, formerly of Holmen, passed away at his home in Boynton Beach, FL on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
He was born in Mindoro, Wis., on May 24, 1932, to Oscar P. and Lydia (Hendrickson) Holter, and was baptized and confirmed at Lewis Valley Lutheran Church in rural Holmen. After attending Mindoro High School, Pastor Holter received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis in 1964 and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul in 1967.
Pastor Holter’s career as a Lutheran minister spanned forty years, serving congregations in Van Nuys, CA, Kasson, MN, Mt. Sterling, WI, Beloit, WI, Newark, IL, Crown Pointe, IN, and Franklin, KY. He retired from Zion Lutheran Church in Franklin, KY in 2007 and moved to Holmen in 2011.
Trig was proud of his Norwegian heritage and deeply loved his family. Trig also enjoyed traveling, conversation, singing and listening to music. Watching sports and listening to talk radio were also a favorite pastime. His true passion, however, was winning souls for Christ and taking any opportunity to spread God’s word.
He is survived by his sons, Daniel Holter of Milwaukee, Timothy Holter of Honolulu, HI, Stephen (Kerri) Holter of Montgomery, IL, and David (Dolores) Holter of Honolulu, HI; grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Holter; a sister, Joyce Gilbertson of Holmen; sister-in-law, Judy Holter of Onalaska; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Lydia; his wife, Carol; a sister, Lois West and her husband, Tom; a sister, Carol Timm and her husband, Gale; a brother, Carsten Holter; and brother-in-law, Cliff Gilbertson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 21 st , at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1201 Main St., Onalaska. Pastor William Bader will officiate. Burial will take place in Lewis Valley Lutheran Cemetery in rural Holmen. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Sunday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 907 Sand Lake Rd., Onalaska, and at the church on Monday from noon until the time of service.
