Raymond C. Hengel, 84, passed away on December 4, 2017. He was born January 3, 1933, in La Crosse to Raymond N. and Dorothy (Love) Hengel. Raymond served in the Army from 1953 until his discharge in 1955.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On July 14, 1956, Raymond married Jean Hilmoe at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on August 15, 2008. Raymond was a professional engineer who owned and operated La Crosse Engineering and Survey Company for 35 years until his retirement in 2000.
Raymond loved his family and led a good and happy life. He enjoyed attending Hengel family reunions, throwing horseshoes, and doing crossword puzzles with his dog, Schotty, at his feet.
Survivors include his five children, Susan (Dennis) George, Judy Hengel and Nancy (Jim) Keller all of La Crosse, Teresa (Blaine) Raymer of Woodbury, Minn., and Jeffrey (Beatriz) Hengel of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Diana Janisch and Barbara Craig, both of La Crosse; a brother, Tom (Maria) Hengel of Lakeland, Fla; along with many nieces and nephews.
His five children offer a special thank you to Kathleen Arneson for being a close friend to Raymond for the past several years, and to Phil and Jane Hengel for their support when his wife, Jean, passed.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Taryn Hengel; three brothers, Larry, Dick and Phil Hengel; and three sisters, Dorothy Cox, Jeanne Butala and Mary Louise Reider.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 7 th at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish in La Crosse with Rev. Brian D. Konopa officating. Entombment will follow in Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M., Wednesday at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse, and again on Thursday at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of Mass. Memorials are suggested to Coulee Region Humane Society, 911 Critter Court, Onalaska, WI 54650.
