Philip J. Steinhoff, 71, of La Crosse passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018. He was born June 27, 1947 in La Crosse to Philip and Margaret (O’Neil) Steinhoff. Phil was a member of the Class of 1965 at Aquinas High School. In college, he worked for the railroad during summer breaks – a job he loved, which provided great memories and stories he would share throughout his lifetime. In 1970, he graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On June 14, 1970 he married the love of his life, Nancy Crotchett, in Burlingame, California.
After graduation from Pharmacy School, Phil worked as a pharmacist near Madison for a few years before returning to La Crosse where, for more than 40 years, he served at St. Francis/Mayo Clinic Health System in both La Crosse and Sparta. During this time, he held the positions of staff pharmacist and Director of Pharmacy. Phil loved being a pharmacist. He loved working with patients, physicians, and other health care providers, many of which became very good friends.
Service to others was important to Phil. He volunteered his time as a pharmacist at St. Clare Health Mission and worked every week at Place of Grace. He was active in the Men’s Club at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish. It made him happy to help family and friends in any way possible.
When not working, Phil enjoyed fishing, watching and coaching his children’s sports, boating on the river with his family, and vacationing in California and Hayward. He played on softball and basketball teams. In recent years, he was passionate about golf, playing several days a week in multiple leagues. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, travelling with Nancy and their friends and telling a good story over a cold beer.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by three children: Jennifer (David) Korducki of Delafield, WI, Patrick (Therese) Steinhoff of St. Paul, MN, Peter (Katie) Steinhoff of Concord, CA, and honorary son Rodney (Melissa) Cooley of Columbus, WI. He is further survived by eight grandchildren: Cameron and Cecelia Korducki, Henry, Carl, Joseph, Clara, Paxton and Hollis Steinhoff; he is also survived by sister Eileen (Philip) Burkhart of Austin, MN, brothers, Daniel (Vicki) Steinhoff and James (Cindy) Steinhoff both of La Crosse, sister-in-law, Sandy Steinhoff of Stewartville, MN, brother-in-law, Denton Crotchett of Houston, TX and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
