Myrtle J. Briggs

Myrtle J. Briggs, 92 of La Crosse, WI., died on Sunday, April 3, 2022 in her home.  She was born in La Crosse on November 9, 1929 to Charles and Frieda (Scott) Kleinschmidt.  Myrtle married Ambrose J. Johnston in La Crosse on October 1, 1949 and they later divorced.  On January 21, 1989 she married Samuel A. Briggs in La Crosse and he preceded her in death on December 25, 1991.

Myrtle had worked as a dietician at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home retiring as the Head of Food Services in 1991.  She loved to travel, was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and loved Christmas.  She was fondly known as “Great Grandma Red Car”, “Internet Granny” or “B.I.G.”  (Bionic internet Granny).  She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Myrtle is survived by her two sons, Michael (Sue) Johnston of La Crosse, Patrick (Kathy) Johnston of Three Lakes, WI., three sisters, Shirley Ruoff of La Crosse, Laurel Halvorson of La Crosse, June (Bill) Lanzel of Onalaska, WI., one brother Phil (Marie) Kleinschmidt of La Crosse, sister in law Janet Kleinschmidt of Onalaska, three grandsons, Michael (Michelle), Eric (Alyssa), Matthew (Randi), one granddaughter Jennifer (Brock) and great grandchildren Philip, Josh, Tate and Nicholas.  She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and her husband Sam.

Memorial services will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at Onalaska United Methodist Church.  Pastor Park Hunter will officiate.  Burial will take place in the Onalaska City Cemetery.  Friends may call on the family Tuesday morning at the church from 11:30 A.M. until the time of services.
