Michael (Mike) Limberg, 74, passed away on June 5th, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 4 th , 1947, in La Crosse, to Helen (Ritter) and Martin Limberg. He married Judy Dammon on August 10th, 1974. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy; three children: Paul Limberg, Heather (Ryan) Franzini, and Katie Limberg; five grandchildren: Calob, Lauren and Abby Limberg, and Jack and Madyson Franzini; his brother, Ken Limberg; and his sister, June (Steve) Smutny. He was preceded in death by his parents: Helen & Martin Limberg; his son, Jason Limberg; brother, David Limberg; and his in-laws, Jack and Dolores Dammon.
Mike served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972. He then spent the next 32 years teaching mathematics at La Crescent Middle - High School and another 10 years at Western Technical College. Two of his early teaching years were spent in Windsor, Australia. In 1990, he was named Teacher of the Year at La Crescent High School. He always enjoyed seeing the “A Ha moment” appear on the students' faces.
During his many years of teaching, he also spent time outside the classroom with students, actively involved in community activities and coaching a number of sports and academic teams. Likewise, summers were spent coaching various city teams. Because of his involvement with kids and his community, he was named La Crescent Man of the Year in 1992. Mike also spent over 40 years refereeing and umpiring many basketball and softball games. Mike was also a proud member of American Legion Post 595 in La Crescent and was the commander there for two terms. Mike had the honor of traveling with his daughter, Heather, on the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, DC, on September 11, 2021.
Mike truly made a difference in so many people's lives, striving daily to make someone’s day a little brighter. He would often share some of his famous words of advice: “Don’t sweat the small stuff - it's all small stuff;” “If it works, it's gotta be right;” and “Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.”
Above all, Mike was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was very proud of his talented wife, Judy, his three children, and his five grandkids. He would spend many hours watching them participate in activities and swimming with them in the pool. Mike was a special person who touched many lives positively. Mike’s family would like to thank Gundersen Health System and Mayo Health System Hematology Departments, every doctor, nurse, MA, and CNA involved in his care. Especially Dr. Parson’s for his genuine care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Gundersen Hematology Department, the La Crescent Police Department, La Crescent Fire Department, Crucifixion Church, or your favorite charity.
