Matthew Edward Opland

Matthew Edward Opland, 35, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 29, 2017. He was born on March 5, 1982 to Scott and Linda (Filkowski) Opland.

Matthew grew up in Onalaska, WI and attended Onalaska High School. He recently earned a degree in Marketing and was very proud of that accomplishment.

Matthew grew up in Onalaska spending time with his family and friends boating on the Mississippi River. He also had a love of music, computers, cars and a special love for the family dog, Mabel.

Matthew is survived by his loving mother Linda Opland, brothers; Mitch (Eve) and Mason Opland. He is futher survived by aunts and uncles; Paul Opland, Paul and Vicki Averill, Terry and Connie Malszycki, Ron and Jackie Brenner, and Fred and Lisa Caya and paternal grandmother; Jacquelyn Opland and other relatives and friends.

Matthew was preceded in death by his father; Scott Opland, paternal grandfather; Milton Opland and maternal grandparents; Edward and Ruby Filkowski.

In Matthews’ memory, we would like to extend the message that it is okay to reach out for help whether you are struggling with mental health or addiction yourself or a loved one is struggling, someone will understand. That moment of courage and leaning into your fears could very well be life changing and a life saving moment.

The bond between a mother and son is a special one. It remains unchanged by time or distance. It is the purest love ~ unconditional and true. It is understanding of any situation and forgiving of any mistake.

Rest in peace Matthew, “I love you” Mom.

A memorial gathering will be held at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 907 Sand Lake Road - Onalaska Chapel on Friday, Nov. 3 from 4-7 p.m.

Private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
