Martin George “Marty” Konop, 84, of La Crosse passed on to eternal life, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
Marty was born on November 30, 1937 in La Crosse, the only child of Theodore and Virginia (Killian) Konop. He graduated from Aquinas High School in 1955. He married his high school classmate, Geraldine “Gerry” Kubal on June 27, 1959 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Marty served his country with the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957. He served on the heavy cruiser USS Newport News and visited ports around the Mediterranean, sailed through the Panama Canal, and participated in gunnery exercises in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He also served his parish of Mary, Mother of the Church as an altar server and member of the Men’s Club. He had a great love for his family, his independence, and just about any dessert.
Marty was preceded in death by his bride, Gerry Konop and his parents. He is survived by five children Timothy (Mary) Konop, Michael (Susan) Konop, Kathy (Todd) Deml, Lynn Iverson, and Christopher (Kiley) Konop. He is survived by eleven grandchildren Elizabeth (Matthew) Lunde, Rebecca (Chad) Wondra, Jason Konop, Amanda (Josh) Wendel, Melissa (Jake) Beran, Michael (Lauren) Deml, Tanner Deml, Nicholas Iverson, Kristin Iverson, Declan Konop and Finley Konop. He is further survived by thirteen great-grandchildren Annabelle, Louisa, and Timothy Lunde; Abram, Charlotte, and Penelope Wondra; Makenna, Graham, and Kinsley Beran; Mason, Madelyn, and Jaxon Wendel; and Ophelia Deml.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 10
th
at 10:30 AM at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, Rev. Brian Konopa will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse is assisting the family.
The Konop family offers their heartfelt thanks to the Gundersen Hospice staff and to Marty’s faithful friends for all their visits and prayers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Mary, Mother of the Church or Aquinas Catholic Schools.
