Marilyn J. Vedell

September 12, 1938 — October 10, 2017

Marilyn Jeanette Vedell, 79 of La Crescent, Minn., died on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at her home. She was born in Porter Ind., on September 12, 1938 to Arvid and Ethel (Ross) Carlson. On June 22, 1963 she married Thomas D. Vedell at the Augsburg Lutheran Church in Porter, Indiana.

Marilyn graduated from Chesterton High School in 1957. After which, Marilyn attended Augustana Nursery, where she met her dearest friend, Sharan Lunde. After graduating in 1958, Marilyn worked for a pediatrician in Chicago, where she enjoyed caring for the infants, even taking them for walks in the park on her day off.

Marilyn and her husband Tom decided to raise their family in La Crescent, Minn after admiring the beautiful region on through-trips. Marilyn loved caring for her family, cooking delicious meals, participating in family game night, and reading her bible and devotions daily. Marilyn always took care to write personal letters to her many nieces, nephews, in-laws, siblings, and friends. She never let a special occasion go forgotten, and she cared deeply for each and every one of them.

Marilyn loved to garden and lovingly tended to her Angel Garden, which she created to honor loved ones. When her garden was buried in the 2007 mudslide, she carefully recovered all the angels from the mud, gave them a good scrubbing, and rearranged them amongst clippings of various plants given by family and friends.

Marilyn will be remembered for her kind heart, supportive nature, and beautiful smile. She will be missed my many.

In addition to her husband Thomas, Marilyn is survived by her children Katrina Vedell of La Crescent, Kristina Vedell of Washington state, Ken Vedell of Bloomington, Minn., one grandson Brendan, her siblings Robert Carlson of Porter, Ind., Donald (Myrle) Carlson of London, Texas, Dorothy Crose of La Crescent, step-sister Patricia (John) Ross of Knox, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter Sharan Marie Vedell, one brother Kenneth Carlson and one sister Betty Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Michael Woods will officiate. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, La Crescent. Friends may call on the family Monday at the church from 10am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be donated in Marilyn’s memory.
