Marie E. Gabel, 88 of La Crosse passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Marie was born September 16, 1928 in Pine Hollow, rural Cashton, WI, one of thirteen children to William and Apolonia (Schreier) Geier. She lived on the farm until, as a teenager she moved to La Crosse.
Marie was united in marriage to Albert Gabel on September 13, 1947, and together God blessed them with four children, Al preceded her in death in 1989. Marie’s working career included the Electric Auto-Lite, Woolworth’s five and dime, Permanent Stainless Steel, La Crosse Garment Co. and finally, UW-L for fifteen years until her retirement.
Marie is survived by her daughter; Judy Richelson of Tampa, FL and her children, Robert (Andrea), Scott (Mary), Jessica (Josh Flick) and Angela; her son, Butch (Rita) Gabel of La Crosse and their children, John, Jason and Brian (Kari); her daughter, Joyce (Ken) Ames and their children, Melissa (Seth) Lentz, Amy (Greg) Adams and Bradley (Katie Cameron); her son, Daniel (Sarah) Gabel and their children, Gunner, Nathan (Jen) and Adam; 20 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren, (she was very proud of her 5 generations); three sisters; Darlene Paulsen and Lavina Flock both of Cashton and Elrita Meyers of St. Joseph Ridge; a brother, Clarence (Janice) Geier of La Crosse. In addition to her husband, Al she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers; infant Robert, Leonard, Lawrence and Vernon; four sisters; Emma Leudke, Rosella Oswald, Eleanor Crook, and Margaret Prestwood; seven brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 7 th in the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman with Monsignor Charles Stoetzel officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse with a rosary to be recited at 5:00 P.M. Visitation will also be held on Friday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services at the church.
Marie’s family would like to express their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Mayo System Hospice for their care and support during her final weeks.
