Marian Elizabeth Havlik

Marian Elizabeth Havlik, age 83, of Gainesville Florida, formerly of La Crosse, WI died on April 25, 2018. She was born on January 14, 1935 in Hiawatha, Kansas to George and Elizabeth (Kish) Glasheen. She graduated Saint Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse, WI. On September 15, 1956 she married Joseph A. Havlik in Sparta, WI.

She is survived by her five children:  Joseph (Thu Thuy) Havlik Jr, Marietta, GA, Rosemarie (James) Hoff, Denise (David) Havlik-Jensen La Crosse, Michael Havlik, Stoddard, WI, and John (Debra) Havlik, Alachua, FL, 11 grandchildren: Stephanie (Dan) Cho, Alexandra, and Victoria Havlik, Danielle (Mark) Pierson, Ashley (Adam) Niemuth, Nicolette Hoff, Olivia (Colin) Schmidt, and Jamison Hoff, Meghan Jensen, Hans (Shara) and Dhruva Havlik, 3-great grandchildren and one sister Carolyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.

Marian worked many years as a Registered Nurse. In 1977 she established Malacological Consultants to pursue a long-time interest in preserving the freshwater mussel fauna of the Mississippi River Basin. Marian worked on most major rivers in the upper Midwest region. Marian was known as the “Clam lady” and made significant scientific contributions to that field. Over the years Marian worked to convince state and federal agencies to protect riverine resources.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 14 th at the Roncalli Newman Center, 1732 State Street, La Crosse with Rev. Billy Dodge officiating. There will be no visitation held prior to the Mass. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church following the Mass. Entombment will be held in the Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare Foundation, Sierra Club - Wisconsin.
