Margaret A. (Kabat) Marcou passed away on December 15, 2019, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI. Born April 8, 1926 to Emil and Lilian (Secky) Kabat, Margaret grew up in La Crosse, and attended elementary school at Saint Wenceslaus parish school. As a young woman, she enjoyed ice skating with friends and being a part of the girls’ track and field team at Aquinas high school, where she graduated in 1944. After graduation, Margaret met John (Jack) Marcou, and they were married on November 23, 1946, sharing fifty-seven years of marriage until his death in 2003.
A dedicated mother to Judy (Larry) Clements of La Crosse, John (Becky) Marcou of Onalaska, Michael (Stacey) Marcou of Onalaska, Mary Marcou (Bob Slimmen) of La Crosse, Paula (Michael) Servais of Onalaska and foster daughter Patricia (Bob) Jones of Big Lake, Alaska, she cared for her children passionately. She was proceeded in death by her husband Jack, an infant son, Paul, and her brother Jerome, to whom she held a special fondness.
Her niece Sally Yeary held a dear place in heart, as did Carla Corbin and all those who knew and loved her most, with seventeen calling her gram or Gma, twenty-one great grandma and five sharing the term of endearment of great- great grandma.
Margaret was a proud member of the Eagle’s Club 1254 Auxiliary and found joy in playing bingo with fellow members, friends and family at the La Crosse location.
Her talents of sewing, baking, cooking and sharing laughs were a few of the wonderful ways she would communicate her fondness for you. She had a remarkable understanding of hospitality and had a special way of making you feel like the most talented and important person she knew every time she saw you. Over the past weeks, as she prepared handmade holiday gifts for some, baked cookies for others, and shared laughs with family members, she reminded us what it looks like to have a meaningful life.
A beloved and lively soul, her memory will forever be celebrated in the hearts of all those who knew her goodwill, sharp wit and very generous heart.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at her parish, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Onalaska on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 11:00 AM. Msgr. Steven Kachel will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank Mary Simon NP for her personal care and friendship over the years.
