Lyle Edward Quillin passed away on July 30th, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Lyle was born on April 27th, 1940 in Iowa to Ed and Greta (Riley) Quillin. After graduating from Aquinas High School in 1958, he received his bachelor’s degree in business from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 58 years, Sandra (Kubiak), as well as his parents and brothers Phillip and James.
He is survived by his, children Kelly (Bill) Schneider, Timothy (Karin) Quillin and Kristin Quillin; four grandchildren, Jacob (Andrea) Schneider, Samantha Schneider, Nicholas and McKenzie Quillin; three great-grandchildren, J.J. and Saylor Schneider and Logan Fairbank; his brother, Larry (Barbara) Quillin and sisters-in-law Barb Quillin, Pat McDowell and Kate Cook and many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of long-time friends including Lee Hall who held a special place in his heart.
After completing his service in the United States Army Reserve, Lyle returned to La Crosse and spent his career working in the family grocery business as the Vice President of Quillin’s Quality Foods until his retirement. Lyle was a longtime resident of the La Crosse area and community was very important to him. In addition to serving on numerous boards, he was named Irishman of the Year, was inducted into the 2000 Boys and Girls Club Wall of Fame and served proudly as the 2000 La Crosse Oktoberfest Festmaster. As a man of deep faith, Lyle also spent over twenty years volunteering at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Lyle’s legacy of kindness, generosity and faith will be forever cherished and remembered by all who knew him. Lyle’s passion for family, sports and travel were equaled by his clever sense of humor and outgoing personality.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, August 12th at 10:00 am at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe (5250 Justin Road, La Crosse, WI 54601) and will be celebrated by Fr. Paul Check. Immediately following mass, all are invited to join the family at the Culina Mariana Café at the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe for “Donuts with Dad”. A private family burial will be held later that day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lyle’s memory to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mary Mother of the Church or the Gemutlichkeit Foundation of La Crosse Oktoberfest.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the numerous family, friends and medical staff who supported Lyle through his courageous battle with cancer over the past eighteen months. A special thanks to Dr. Peter Franta for his kind, compassionate care and friendship over the years. Dr. Tazo Karedan and the Mayo radiation team, the Bethany St. Joseph staff and Mayo hospice team for the wonderful care they provided to Lyle.
The amazing support, love and prayers Lyle received from his Shrine family will never be forgotten.
