Just before Thanksgiving in 2020, Lucy Ann Von Arx passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62. She died on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at home in Carrollton, IL. She had recently moved to Carrollton from her longtime residence in Bloomington, IL to be closer to family.
Lucy was born February 2, 1958 in La Crosse, WI, second daughter and third child of Frances K. (Fregin) and Francis C. Von Arx. She is survived by her mother Frannie, siblings: Liz Killion (Jon Baker) of Carrollton, IL; Ted Von Arx of La Crescent, MN; Tom (Janice) Von Arx of San Diego, CA; Kathryn (Tim) Hying of McHenry, IL; Sarah (Dwight) Stever of Omaha, NE; and John (Amy) Von Arx of Rice Lake, WI as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Francis in 2017; her brother, Charlie in 2014; her brother-in-law, Gerald Killion in 2008; and her nephew, Nathan Stever in 2002.
Lucy grew up on the family farm in Bush Valley, Minnesota. She attended St. Peter’s Grade School in Hokah, La Crescent High School, and graduated from Western Wisconsin Technical Institute in La Crosse, WI, with an Associate Degree in Commercial Art. Lucy left the area for Illinois, working in the telecom and cable television field as an installation technician, then facility coordinator, finishing out her career in Bloomington, IL, with Verizon/Frontier Communications. In between telecom endeavors, Lucy worked as a very effective sales person with her cousins, Barb and Ed Kruse, in the Kansas City area. For a short time, she was a mail carrier, and most recently, was a favorite of the locals at the Cracker-Barrel in Bloomington, IL where she worked as a server.
Lucy was the center of raucous fun for her younger siblings and, in later years, her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed journaling and catching up with friends and relatives on a regular basis. Lucy was the type of person who could make a new friend while in line at the grocery store. She loved to garden, cook, and share the fruits of her labor. Lucy always had a special affinity for plants and thoroughly enjoyed yard work while keeping things looking nice around her home. She was a very talented artist, a prolific photographer, and brought a creative flair to anything she did—she could arrange any array of items in such a beautiful manner. Fortunately, we’ll all be able to remember her and her talents with the drawings and paintings she created along with the many photos she took and leaves as part of her legacy.
Lucy always had a close relationship with God and was a member of the Church in Bloomington, IL. She spent many hours helping others, volunteering her time to work with youth groups in the Bloomington-Normal area and even drove the Church bus to be sure others could get to worship services. Lucy could always be depended on for a pleasant word, a beautiful smile, and a willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone. She will be dearly missed by her many family members and friends.
