Larry D. Hostrawser

February 8, 1944 — June 2, 2022

Larry Dean Hostrawser, age 78, of La Crescent, MN, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, June 2, 2022.  Larry was born in Black River Falls, WI. His family later moved to the Hokah, MN area. Larry graduated from Houston MN high school on June 2, 1962.

On March 7, 1965, Larry married Rosella Kallenbach and they later divorced. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Sandra, William, and Robert.  On June 2, 1995, Larry married Jane M. (Zenke) Husman at St John’s Lutheran Church in Nodine, MN. They were blessed with twenty-seven years of marriage.

Larry served in the Naval Reserve. He also was a police officer with the Houston County Sheriff’s office.  Larry later became a steamfitter with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry. He served as the President of Local 434 and was a member for fifty-seven years.

Larry loved to fish and hunt, travelling, camping and road trips. He loved to teach his grandsons to fish.  He loved to garden and plant flowers. He really enjoyed the outdoors.  As his abilities slowed, he loved to ride his scooter around La Crescent, visiting with friends and enjoying the weather and good stories.  Most recently, he fell in love with a dog named Max, who became his comfort during tough days.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jane; three children, Sandra (Garrett Redmond) Hostrawser, Lansing, IA, William Hostrawser, Onalaska, WI, and Robert (Fauna) Hostrawser of Stoughton, WI; stepsons, Daniel (Karen) Husman, Greycliff, MT, and Gregory Husman of La Crescent, MN. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Richard Hostrawser, Ezekiel Redmond, Parker Justman, Jordyn Hostrawser, Cole Hostrawser, Kyle (Christy) Sorenson, Tyaunna (James) Hickey and Jacob Husman; and seven great-grandchildren, Renezmae, Isabella and Wesley Hostrawser, Maeve and Iris Hickey, and Desmond and Oscar Sorenson.

Larry is further survived by sisters, Rita Holliday of Hokah, MN, Betty Lokker of New Richmond, WI, and Mary Balzer of St. Charles, MO; a brother, Charles (Ann) Hostrawser of La Crosse, WI; sisters-in-law, Lois Zenke and Doreen Gile, both of La Crescent; and brother-in-law, Jerry (Joan) Zenke of Nodine, MN

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Grace (Posvick) Hostrawser; brothers-in-law, Vern Lokker, Donald Holliday, Duane Zenke and Lavern Gile; and several cherished aunts and uncles.

As Larry’s life began to fade, I had these thoughts about Larry. You are probably familiar with the words “A golden heart stopped beating”.

Larry’s heart was worn out because he gave so much of it away to everyone he knew and loved. He cried when others had pain, he prayed when others needed it. He prayed for help for himself and when things because difficult, he never became angry for his own burdens.

He had some very long years of pain and limitations. But God blessed us with a big guy with an even bigger heart. As we mourn his loss, we remind everyone to cherish every moment of every day that God gives you with those you love and meet.

We rejoice and praise God for his promise of a reunion in heaven where this world’s sin and pain are gone. We love you, Larry!
