La Vern W. Cass, 92 of La Crescent, Minn., died on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health System, La Crosse. He was born in La Crosse on August 16, 1925 to Henry and Corabell (Walker) Cass. Vern had lived his entire life in La Crescent except for the time spent in military service. He attended Central High School graduating at the age of 16 in 1942. Selective service called his number and Vern enlisted in the United States Navy proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in May of 1946. On November 16, 1969 Vern married Marilyn Wiskow at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse.
Following his military service he worked for Allis Chalmers Manufacturing in the Farm Equipment division for twenty three years. Other places of employment included Thern Inc. of Winona, Minn., Northern Engraving, Outers Labs and St. Francis Medical Center. In addition to his regular employment, Vern had also worked in Sales for Tri State Monument Company since 1955.
Vern had served as the President of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery Assn. for 14 years and was very instrumental in it’s establishment. He was also a 72 year charter member of the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 La Crescent, the Morning Star Masonic Lodge 29 of La Crescent and the order of the Eastern Star. Vern will be remembered by many as an accomplished author who’s engaging stories captivated readers over the years. He was also instrumental in publishing several service and safety manuals for industry.
In addition to his wife Marilyn of La Crescent, he is survived by one son Roger (Helene) Wiskow of Roseau, Minn., grandson Darren Wiskow of Dillworth, Minn., granddaughter Denise (Michael) Montgomery of Dillworth and triplet great grandchildren; David, Kevin, Oliver and Piper Montgomery also of Dillworth; one sister Lavena (Jim) Brady of Melrose, Wis., and one brother Delbert Lee (Connie) Cass of Owatonna, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to recognize and extend thanks to Dr. Win C. Hlang; Dr. T. Scott Cunningham and the staff at May Clinic Health System La Crosse.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Kent Johnson will officiate. Burial with Military honors will follow in Prince of Peace Cemetery, rural La Crescent. Friends may call on the family Friday evening at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crescent chapel; 111 South Oak St., from 6 until 8pm and again at the church on Saturday from 10am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
