Joseph A. Walter, 89, of La Crosse, WI, and formerly of La Crescent, MN, died on Sunday, November 7, 2021, in La Crescent. He was born in Hokah, MN on April 15, 1932, to Frank and Anna (Hafner) Walter. Joe attended school at St. Peter’s in Hokah. He spent the majority of his life farming in the La Crescent area, (18 with his brother Vernon), while also working at Torrance Foundry and Lunde Foundry. Joe enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre and 500. In retirement, he traveled with Colette throughout the United States via bus tours. He also enjoyed woodworking, square dancing and (most of the time), watching the Vikings and Twins play.
Joe married Colletta E. Ebert on May 5, 1956, at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral in La Crosse.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Colette; sisters, Dorothy, Sr. Rita Ann and Margie; brothers, Raymond, George, Vernon, Francis and Willard.
Survivors include his children, Tom (Jenny) Walter of La Crosse, Susan Walter of Texas, Dennis (Judy) Walter of La Crescent, and Sheila (Dave) Freese of La Crescent; grandchildren, Nicole (James) McCarter, Anthony Tubbs, Matt (Kris) Walter, Jack (Kailey) Walter, Andy Walter, Kevin Walter, Tina (Drew) Atwood, and Kim Freese; great grandchildren, Jacob, Lauren, Jordy, Landen, Tessa, Aiden, Bryson and one on the way; brothers and sisters, Mary Ann (Marty) Zadow, Norbert (Mary) Walter, Richard (Teresa) Walter; sister-in-law, Dawn Walter; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent. Rev. John L. Evans ll will officiate. Burial will follow in the Crucifixion Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church on Saturday from 8:00 A.M. until the time of services.
