John Edward Subjek

John Edward Subjek was born on July 9th, 1946, to Edward and Dorothy (Rybold) Subjek, of La Crosse. He grew up on the South Side with his older brother, Michael Subjek. He graduated from Central High School in 1964.

John enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in August of 1967 until his discharge in March of 1970. During his service with the USMC, John was stationed at Camp Pendelton until his deployment to Vietnam, where he served in active combat for just over a year.

Shortly after returning to La Crosse from his time in the service, John met the love of his life, Kathleen Riordan, while he was bartending at Snuffy's. They married in 1972 and raised four kids in Holmen. John worked as a carpenter for most of his life, following in the footsteps of his father. But, his true passion was the outdoors and sharing that love with his kids and grandkids.

John and Kathy were fortunate enough to have a seasonal campsite at Arpin Family Campground in Warrens. They spent a lot of time there and developed some great friendships with their incredible neighbors. John's last day on this earth was a good one. He spent it at the campground with his neighbors and Kathy, enjoying the outdoors that he loved so much. John died peacefully during an afternoon nap, on the 4th of July, 2024.

John is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Dorothy Subjek; older brother, Michael Subjek and youngest son, Andrew Subjek.

John is survived by his wife, Kathleen Subjek; mother-in-law, Joyce Elsen; kids Anthony (Angela) Subjek; Brian (Cass) Subjek; Lisa (Dave) Foster; grandkids, Clay, Ciara, Mattison, Jacob, and Kyleigh Foster; Owen Subjek; Cooper Subjek and many nieces and nephews.

Please join us in remembering John and celebrating his life. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 16th, 2024 at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave S in La Crosse, from 11am-1pm with Military Honors at 1pm. After, we would like to invite everyone for a picnic at Neshonoc Swarthout Park Shelter in West Salem, from 2pm-6pm. Light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
