John L. Knutson, born March 28, 1948, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the Tomah V.A. in Tomah, Wisconsin.
John was the devoted husband of Simonne Dutchin-Knutson, whom he married on March 27, 2002. He often referred to her as the greatest love of his life. Together, they shared a bond filled with cherished memories and unwavering devotion. John was a very proud father to his son, James Michael (Mike), and a loving father-in-law (Pops) to Christina, affectionately known to him as "Chrissy." His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Mikey (Sam) Carroll, J.T., and Matthew, as well as his great-grandchildren, Vincent and Vaan Carroll. John was also a beloved "fur baby" dad to Kody and Jaxx.
A dedicated patriot, John served his country with honor for over 21 years in the United States Navy. Among his many accolades were the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam and the Navy Recruiting Command Gold Wreath. His military career allowed him to explore diverse cultures and countries, experiences he deeply valued. John’s service was a source of immense pride for both him and his family.
In retirement, John enjoyed golf, country music, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers, traveling with Simonne, and spending time with friends. He was known for his boundless kindness and generosity—whether helping neighbors with yard work, baking treats for friends, or assisting others without hesitation. He was also the “best son-in-law” driving numerous Winters with his in-laws to Florida so that they could escape the cold and snow, each year. Of all of these, his favorite pastime was being at home with his wife, and dog, and watching a movie or cheering on a football game.
John also pursued lifelong learning through degrees and certifications in Auto Mechanics, EMT Basic Training, Jacksonville Police Auxiliary, Conservation and Wildlife, Upholstery, and more.
He is survived by his brothers Robert (Cindy) Knutson and George (Laurie) Knutson; his mother- and father-in-law Jean and Sydney Dutchin; sister-in-law Shelly Dutchin; brother-in-law Charles (Shawn) Dutchin; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie (Ekern) and George R. Knutson; his sister Ann Lee and her husband Jeffrey Lee; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his beloved dog Kody, whom he always lovingly referred to as "Little Monster".
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Tomah V.A., especially the Hospice/Long Term Care team, for their exceptional care over the past two and a half years. Also, sincere appreciation and gratitude to our friends and neighbors who have always supported us.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home in La Crosse from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a short service at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow at St. Andrew's Square, located inside Boot Hill Pub, 1501 St. Andrew's Street, followed by burial at Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair, Wisconsin at 3:00 PM. John’s life was defined by love for his family and friends, dedication to his country, and a passion for life’s simple joys. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
From his wife, Simonne "Love you More".
