James B. Hofer, 94 of La Crescent, Minn. passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. He was born September 28, 1926 in La Crosse to George and Anna (Gerdes) Hofer. James had served in the United States Army during WWII from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He achieved Sharp Shooter status.
In 1955 he married Angeline Miller at Crucifixion Catholic Church in La Crescent. James had worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as an engine watchman and later as a bridge tender on the swing bridge over the Mississippi River. He was an avid woodcarver, fisherman and hunter.
In addition to his wife of nearly 65 years Angeline, he is survived by a son, George (Maggie) Hofer of Yuma, AZ; a daughter, Diane (D)Hofer of La Crosse; two grandsons, James and Louis Hofer along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Viola and a brother, David.
Graveside services were held on Friday, October 9 th at Crucifixion Cemetery in La Crescent with Father John L. Evans II officiating. Military honors were provided by the La Crescent American Legion Post 595.
