In Loving Memory of James Louis Blake (1937 - 2023)
James Louis Blake, aged 86, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, passed away on October 30, 2023, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
James, known affectionately as "Jim," was born on March 18, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis A and Clara Blake. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Ann Blake (née Roesler), who passed away on May 14, 1996. He is survived by his life partner, Joyce Weber, and his children: Kathleen Haus (Gordon), Michael Blake (Francis Greep), Susan Genz (Scott), and Thomas Blake (Deanna), five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Anne and Joseph Weber and their children and grandchildren.
As a young boy, James and his family relocated from Chicago to Dakota, Minnesota, where they owned and operated the Midway Club. He graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1955, leaving behind a legacy of athleticism as he lettered in football, track, and wrestling. He was his class's Co-captain and a distinguished member of the National Honor Society.
In September 1961, James married Virginia in Coon Valley, Wisconsin, and they shared 34 years of marriage until her passing. In 2002, Jim found his second love, Joyce Weber, and their journey together spanned over 20 years. They resided on Lake Onalaska and in South Texas, embracing the joys of family, travel, food, card games, and sporting events.
For most of his working life, James was employed by La Crosse Concrete Company, where he worked in the plant and by hauled sanitary pipes across the tri-state region. He retired from his primary employment in 1998.
Jim’s hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, bowling, and could play euchre in his sleep. Rumor had it that when Jim snored he was actually giving out euchre strategy tips in his dreams.
James had a profound love for his country and his patriotism ran deep. He exhibited unwavering dedication as a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. His remarkable service spanned an impressive 43 years, culminating in his retirement in 1997, having attained the distinguished rank of Command Sergeant Major. Throughout his military career, James assumed roles within several Army National Guard units, notably the 32nd Infantry Brigade (Red Arrow) and the HHC 264th Engineer Group.
