J. Maxine Harris Mueller

1940. J. Maxine Harris Mueller, 94 of Middleton, WI and formerly of La Crescent, died on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the University Hospital in Madison. She was born August 19, 1922 in La Crosse to Sidney and Gladys (Tenneson) Johnson. Maxine grew up in Houston, MN and graduated from Houston High School in 1940. She later graduated from St. Olaf College with her teaching degree and was especially proud to have earned her Master’s degree from Winona State University.

On June 19, 1946, she married J. Stanley Harris in Houston, MN and he preceded her in death in August of 1985. Maxine taught school in Minnesota and Iowa for 33 years. For 29 of those years, she taught at the La Crescent Middle and High Schools retiring in 1985. While at La Crescent High School, she was instrumental in forming the Math Team.

In 1990, Maxine married Herb Mueller in La Crescent and he preceded her in death in 2006. Maxine enjoyed a variety activities including refinishing furniture, traveling, photography, needlework, sewing, golfing, bridge and her coffee club. Her greatest love was spending time with her precious grandsons and great-grandsons.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Kris (Tom) Holdorf of Middleton, WI; three grandsons, Matthew (Alicia) Holdorf of Whitefish Bay, WI, Adam (Ali) Holdorf of Oak Park, IL and Andrew Harris of Burbank, CA; three great-grandchildren, Oliver Max Holdorf, Grayson Holdorf and Kees Holdorf. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, J. Scott Harris; and a brother, Lyman Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Monday, May 15 ^th at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 S. Oak Street, La Crescent with Pastor Mike Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163; La Crescent High School Math Team or an organization of choice.
