Henry R. Lawrence, a WWII vet, passed away on May 28, 2023 in his home at age 94. Henry was born in La Crosse on 09/21/1928 to Maria Teresa (Young) and Henry George Lawrence. His siblings were Helen Grasslie, George, Lucile Amato, and Marilyn Abeyta.
Henry bravely joined the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII at age 15. His service to his country was always something he was very proud of, and made him the man he was.
After returning home he married the love of his life Beverly Helgerson on Oct 1, 1949. They were blessed with 67 years together until Beverly went to the Lord on February 28, 2016. They had four children - Shirley (Schmeckpeper), Dennis Lawrence, Steve Lawrence, and Kristie Lawrence. Henry was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. No one could have asked for a more loving, kind hearted father. Henry is survived by his 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 12 great, great grandchildren and younger sister Marilyn Abeyta.
Before retiring, Henry ran Henry’s Hangups where he made custom picture frames for many years. Henry was also a very avid animal lover his entire life. After retiring his favorite hobby was feeding the birds, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, feral kittens, and even the occasional duck or opossum in his backyard. Henry died at home with his cat Goldie sleeping beside him which was his last wish.
Henry will be dearly missed by his family, and those lucky to have known him. His infectious smile, stories, and antics lighted up every family gathering. Funeral services for Henry Lawrence will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 10:00 am at the Onalaska Church of Christ. Pastor Craig Chappell will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior. Following the funeral will be burial at Mormon Coulee Cemetery.
