Helen Louise Harms

Helen Louise Harms, 90, of Onalaska, died on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the Onalaska Care Center. She was born on July 15, 1927 in Isle, MN to Arthur and Bertha (Munkelwitz) Harms. Helen spent eight years in Africa with the Peace Corps and US AID where she taught English and music. She then worked for many years as a speech pathologist at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse. She was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Onalaska, the LWML, Minnesota Teacher’s Association, and ASHA- American Speech and Hearing Association. Helen loved to travel the world, and went to Alaska for several weeks on a mission trip when she was in her 70’s. She enjoyed going out to eat with her friends from church, and attending LWML conferences.

She is survived by a brother Ed Harms of Red Wing, MN, nieces and nephews, Gretchen (David) Anderson of Red Wing, Greg Harms of Brainerd, MN, Steve (Sheri) Harms of Gilbert, MN, Therese Harms of Minneapolis, Carolyn Harms of Minneapolis, and Paul Harms of Minneapolis, and a sister-in-law Arlene Harms of Isle, MN.  She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Arthur, Verne, and Carsten “Dick”, and two sisters-in-law, Edith Harms and Donna Harms.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Onalaska. Pastor Donald Stein will officiate. Burial will follow in the Onalaska City Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church stained glass window fund.
