Gregory Bernard Hegenbarth, 89, of La Crosse, passed away from a rare intestinal condition on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He was born on November 22. 1928 in La Crosse to Bernard and Anna (Hoffman) Hegenbarth. Greg graduated from Aquinas High School in 1946. He attended St. John’s University and then served with the US Army from 1951-1952 as a radio operator with the 45 th Division Artillery. He then worked at W.A. Roosevelt until 1966 and then with La Crosse Seed Corporation as a warehouse manager from 1966 until 1980. He also bartended at several places included the Knights of Columbus, the Pump, and Bluffside Tavern. Greg was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the VFW Post 1530, the American Legion Post 52, and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1920. He was an avid Packer fan and enjoyed stamp and coin collection, bowling, and all sports.
He is survived by a daughter Nancy (Kirby) Rahn of Houston, MN, a granddaughter Amanda Rahn, three sisters, Marian Mooney, Ellen (Lynn) Ceason, and Fran (Terry Ritter) Hegenbarth, a brother Norbert Hegenbarth, a brother-in-law Chet Miller, numerous nieces and nephews and his cat Knight. He was preceded in death by his wife Susan Brindley, two sisters, Clarie Miller and Bernita Bluske, a sister-in-law Marilyn Hegenbarth, a brother-in-law Lloyd “Babe” Mooney, and a nephews Todd Miller.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral & Cremation Services of La Crosse. Pastor Martin Yeager will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM and again on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
