Gordon E. Meyer

March 7, 1935 — July 5, 2020

Gordon Edwin Meyer passed away peacefully on July 5, 2020 at Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, WA after a two-year battle with colon cancer. He was born on March 7, 1935 in Caledonia, Minnesota to Edwin and Gladys Meyer. He grew up on a farm in the beautiful Thompson Valley with his sisters, Barbara and Dorothy, and brothers, Douglas and Howard. He graduated from Winona State College and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1957. Gordon married Mary Lee Schoh in Eitzen, MN on March 25 th , 1961. Together they had two children, Patty and Peter. The couple later divorced. He had a 36-year career with the U.S. Forest Service in Duluth, Minnesota, Rhinelander, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

Gordon leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Carolyn Malone. With Carolyn he built a home in Flint, Texas on Lake Palestine. But family ties are strong, and in 2012 he and Carolyn moved to Vancouver, WA where they enjoyed living near Carolyn’s children, Val (Jon) Evart and Byron (Jennette) Folwell. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest drew many visits by Gordon’s children, Patty (Chris) Pile and Peter (Lynne) Meyer.

Gordon is predeceased by his two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Joe Shockley and Dorothy and Oren Pengra, and his two sisters-in law, Mary C. Meyer and Mary K. Meyer.

He is survived by his brothers, Douglas and Howard, his brother-in-law, Judson Malone, his children and step-children, and his grandchildren, Justin and Lauren Pile, and Lane and Maron Meyer, Lydia Keuler, Sydney Folwell, Shavon Albee, and Carly Clark, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Gordon embraced life in all the communities in which he lived. He was an active member of each of his local Methodist churches. He was involved with Meals On Wheels and Share House Homeless Shelter. And he especially loved their poodle, Waif, who will miss him terribly.
The family would like to thank the many physicians who cared for Gordon, including Dr. He and the caring staff of PeaceHealth Hospice Care.

Remembering the Forest Service mascots Smokey the Bear (“Only you can prevent forest fires”) and Woodsy Owl (“Give a hoot, don’t pollute”), live each day to make our world a better place. Respect the environment. Pick up litter. Please make donations in lieu of flowers to PeaceHealth Hospice.
