Gladys H. Johnson (Arneson), 99, of La Crescent passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 surrounded by members of her loving family. She is survived by her four children, Sharon (Ron) Kendhammer, Don (Chris) Johnson, Loran Johnson (special friend Andrea), and Jeff Johnson; seven grandchildren, Chad (Kathy) and Joel (Marissa) Kendhammer; Jamie and Kevin Johnson; Kendra (Grant) Chavin, Jason Johnson (Kayla Stanton); and David Johnson; seven great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Oliver, and Sam Kendhammer; Braxten P. Johnson and Austin and Lucas Chavin; Braxton Matthew Johnson; two brother-in-laws, James Johnson and Raymund Hahn and numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys has been reunited in Heaven with her husband, Arthur; son Gerald “Jerry”, a grandson Matthew Johnson, her parents; two brothers Orlan and Herman; four sisters, Minerva Blegen, Cora Wheaton, Corrine Schild, and Esther Hahn.
Gladys was born in rural Spring Grove, MN to James and Clara (Storlie) Arneson on July 2, 1921. She graduated from Caledonia High School and married Arthur E. Johnson on September 30, 1950. She worked as a retail clerk at various locations until retiring from Doerflingers Department Store. Gladys was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and participated in the annual apple pie bake, quilt making, and lefse making. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, flower and vegetable gardening, traveling, summer trips up north, weekends on the river, family picnics, and bird watching. Gladys was always ready to go when someone called, and especially looked forward to the local church suppers.
Due to the pandemic, no guests may attend memorial services in person. The family welcomes you to join us at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 8, 2021, via live-stream on the Schumacher-Kish Facebook page. Pastor Kent Johnson will officiate and interment will follow at Prince of Peace Cemetery in rural La Crescent. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Gundersen Hospice team and especially R.N. Jennifer for their loving care of Gladys.
