George Albert Mccune, Jr.

George Albert McCune, Jr. of La Crescent, MN passed away unexpectedly Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. He was born February 7, 1955 in La Crosse to George Albert and Lorraine (Syverson) McCune, Sr. and graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1973.

At the age of 11, George began teaching himself how to play guitar and practiced his music every day. He worked as a professional entertainer singing and playing guitar and collaborated with many musicians locally and around the country. George backed up artists such as Steppenwolf, Cheap Trick, Marshall Tucker Band, Jefferson Starship, Sawyer Brown and others. He was also a member of many other bands, including Nexus, Rasputin, Task Force, The Rays, and most recently Cozy Allen McCune and Kingfish. He also performed weddings and other club engagements with his wife, Jan, and performed his original pieces at ECKANKAR events and seminars.

George married Kim Nix on Feb. 7, 1977 in La Crosse, WI. They had one daughter, Katie McCune. They later divorced. He married Jan Wurzer on June 22, 1985 in St. Lucas, IA. They had one daughter, Julia (McCune) Catlin. He loved and adored his family and would do anything for them. George enjoyed giving guitar lessons to students and recorded guitar tracks for various studios. He had a very kind heart. He loved children, animals and birds and enjoyed fishing, listening to late night radio and caring for his pets and home. He also collected marbles, rocks, and butterflies and could tell you the name and type of any of them.

In addition to his wife Jan of 32 years, George is survived by two daughters, Katie McCune, of La Crosse, WI, and Julia (Richard) Catlin III of Reno, NV; four grandchildren; Noah, Rylee, Landen all of La Crosse, and Sofia of Reno NV; his mother, Lorraine McCune of La Crosse; his mother-in-law, Margaret Wurzer, of St. Lucas IA; brothers-in-law; Wayne (Diane) Wurzer of Solon, IA, Lauren Wurzer of Oklahoma City, OK; Donny (Jo) Wurzer of La Crosse, Leon (Dawn) Wurzer of Toddville, IA and Lloyd (Janice) Wurzer of West Union, IA; sisters-in-law, Jeannie (Bill) Springer of Vinton, IA and Sherry (Corey) Buchheit of St. Lucas, IA; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, George McCune Sr., father-in-law, Francis Wurzer, and sister-in-law, Sally Wurzer.

The family would like to express their appreciation to First Responders of La Crescent, MN, Tri-State Ambulance, and Gundersen Health Emergency Room staff and support team for their excellent care of George and our family.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 2 nd at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse with Eckankar cleric Bob Mullen officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until time of services. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
