Francis W. Merfeld

Francis W. "Obbie" Merfeld, 86, of La Crosse, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Obbie was born in La Crosse on October 25, 1938, to Henry and Bernice (Spah) Merfeld. After attending school in La Crosse, he worked at Allis Chalmers before starting employment for the City of La Crosse in the Street Department, from which he retired. He was united in marriage to Shirley Bakkum in July 1969.

During his retirement, Obbie enjoyed camping, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a quiet, soft-hearted soul who was always willing to lend a hand, no questions asked. His favorite hangout was Rosie's Cafe, where he made many fond friendships over the years. He enjoyed visiting with his friends there and teasing his favorite waitresses.

Obbie is survived by his daughter, Shelly (Alan) Jones of La Crosse, stepdaughter Cindy Nicol of La Crosse and stepson Thomas Nicol of Sparta; his siblings Paul "Pickle" Merfeld of La Crosse, David (Sue) Merfeld of New Hampshire and Kay Vigdahl of La Crosse; his grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Jones of La Crosse; his special friend Juanita Haag and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bernice (Spah) Merfeld; his wife, Shirley (Bakkum); his brothers Thomas Merfeld and Lawrence "Herman" Merfeld and sisters Mary Margaret, Corky Lounsbourgh and Geri Billis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025, at St. James the Less Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse and one hour prior to Mass at the church on Friday.
