Francis David Wolfert passed away at home on June 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 14, 1937 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin the only son of Orcen and Alice Wolfert. Dave was a graduate of Sheboygan Falls High School and UW River Falls. After graduation, Dave worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in southeast Alaska. Before moving to La Crosse, he worked as an FDA Inspector in Chicago after which he went to work for the state of Wisconsin as a Public Health Inspector, retiring in 1997.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jean Mary McMullen, on September 5, 1959, and together they made La Crosse their home, raising three sons and a daughter. Dave was an unassuming, humble man with a comforting presence who loved to be outside, especially on his land. He was an avid outdoorsman who was passionate about hunting, fishing, boating, gardening and camping with family and friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Coaching and supporting his family’s activities and interests meant the world to him. And his family felt he was their biggest fan.
Ever faithful to the Catholic Church, Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jean; sons, Richard (Robyn), Robert (Sherry), Stephan (Dawn); daughter, Lisa (Heidi); five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Michlig and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Jim and Isabel McMullen; and brother-in-law, David Michlig.
Dave will be remembered for his extraordinary listening, quiet kindness and his ready sense of humor.
The family would like to thank Gundersen Hospice Program for their wonderful care.
