Elaine H. Hunter

June 2, 1935 — November 22, 2020

Elaine Hunter, 85, of West Salem, WI and formerly of La Crescent, MN died on November 22, 2020. She was born on June 2, 1935 in Wadena, MN and lived most of her life in La Crescent. She was the daughter of Bernard & Mae (Beaman) Hanebuth of Deer Creek, MN. Following high school, she received a teaching degree and she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse. She met and married Earl Hunter in 1955 and they had 6 children: Alan, Sharon, Dirk, Brad, Todd & Mark. She taught preschool and Sunday School for many years. She was actively involved in the Historical Society, Genealogy Club, church, and other organizations. Her favorite hobby was knitting, crocheting, and making quilts for all of the family members. She loved to spend time with family, especially all of the grandchildren. She touched the lives of everyone she met. The family would like to thank her friends at Messiah Lutheran Church in La Crescent and her friends at Salem Terrace in West Salem where she lived. She loved her extended family.

She is survived by her children Alan (Heike) Hunter of Onalaska, WI, Sharon Mellem (Al Diede) of Parker, S.D., Dirk (Carol) Hunter of Onalaska, WI, Brad Hunter (Jen Bury) and Todd Hunter both of La Crescent, MN and Mark (Kim) Hunter of West Salem, WI, eight grandchildren Melissa (Jake) Schneider, Austin (Samantha) Hunter, Katelyn (Joram) Smith, Ken (Jonna) Mellem, Zach & Kelly Hunter, Mikaela (Luke) Schultz & Molly Hunter, Brothers Marvin (Bonnie) Hanebuth and Donald (Sharon) Hanebuth, and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Hunter, parents, and brother Roger Hanebuth.


Private family services will be held. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

We look forward to seeing Elaine in the resurrection of eternal life.
