Edward A. Bakken

January 5, 1916 — September 24, 2018

Edward Albert Peter Bakken, 102, of La Crosse/ Onalaska, Wis., was called home to heaven by his Savior on Monday, September 24, 2018. Ed’s Christian faith was always strong and steadfast.  He was born January 5, 1916 in Bergen Township, Genoa area, the oldest child of Elmer and Minnie (Krause) Bakken. He was baptized February 9, 1916 and confirmed April 28, 1929 at St Peter Lutheran Church, Chaseburg, Wis. He married Beulah A. Sylvester Sept 16, 1942, and they enjoyed 71 years together. She died in 2014.

Ed was self-educated after eighth grade, well-read and kept learning new technology throughout his century of living, from horses, to tractors, to face-timing with great grandchildren. He was a saver (and coupon clipper) beyond measure.  He was active in his church serving for many years as head usher at Mount Calvary, La Crosse and in other capacities. He was a member of the original group who began Luther High School. He was employed by various La Crosse area schools and retired from the University of Wis. - La Crosse (1981) after 27 years without even one sick day.  God blessed him in many ways.  He continued as a bank custodian during semi-retirement at several financial institutions including:  Bank of Onalaska and Community Credit Union.  His love for work never ceased.

During his summer vacations from the University, he would find seasonal construction work.  He helped build the first La Crosse McDonald’s Restaurant and the La Crosse Seminary.  Ed also was a block warden during WW II supervising blackouts. Ed was raised on a farm, and loved all the aspects of farming while “in joying” as much time as possible outside.  He had a “green thumb” and many four-leaf clovers!

Ed is survived by two children of Onalaska, Diane (Larry) Lindesmith and Doug (Deb) Bakken and five loving grandchildren, Abby (Jason) Rombalski of Minneapolis, Minn., Nate (Fran) Lindesmith of St Charles, Mo., Dave (Julie) Lindesmith of Apopka, Fla., Ryan (Kelly) Bakken of Oregon, Wis., and Shelley (Josh) Gates of La Crescent, Minn., eleven great grand-children, several step grand-children, one sister-in-law, Donna (Richard) Bakken of La Crosse, and many dear nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his wife, his brother Richard Bakken, and two sisters, Louise Manke and Esther Sheehy.  His aunts and uncles were particular treasures to him with many stories he recalled, and he always loved family get-together events.  Ed enjoyed playing cards for many years, and bingo in recent times.  “Time of Grace” and “Wheel of Fortune” were his preferred television shows.

The family would like to especially thank the pastoral care of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Onalaska for their many visits. Also, Frank Corona, who’s “Hope in Jesus” weekly sessions at Brookdale the past six years have been inspiring and uplifting to Dad and other residents.  Many crossed Ed’s path as his care needs increased. He accepted his failing body with dignity, alert mind, and faithful spirit as care workers provided additional assistance. We are grateful to many.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, September 29th, at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1201 Main St, Onalaska, with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Pastor P. William Bader will officiate.  Lunch will follow and then interment at Green Mound Cemetery, Holmen.  Memorials preferred to:  St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Onalaska; Luther High School Building Fund, Onalaska; or Gundersen Medical Foundation, La Crosse.  Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home is assisting the family.  An online guest book is available at www.schumacher-kish.com.
