Blessed with 90 years, Delmar Harris passed into his loving Savior’s arms on Sunday, June 24, 2018.
Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has overcome death and the grave and through the Gospel brings light and immortality to us with His Word. We joyfully remember what He has done through his servant Delmar.
Delmar Earl Harris was given life by his Creator on October 6, 1927 in La Crosse, WI. Born to Delbert and Cora Harris (Larson), he was reborn of the Holy Spirit through his baptism on December 5, 1927 and later, through his public confession, was confirmed in the Lutheran church. Throughout his life he was strengthened and renewed through the gifts of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
Delmar attended Central High School, playing all manner of sports, with a special affinity for baseball. He served his country faithfully in US Navy. He was a Seaman 1 st Class on board the USS Charles R. Ware, at the close of WWII. He received the gift of a wife and helpmate when he married the beautiful Marie Harris (Jorgenson) on January 29, 1949. He was bounteously blessed with the vocation of fatherhood, which gave him eight wonderful children, twelve grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. He held professional positions in data processing management and in realty. Always one to have a hobby—or two, Delmar enjoyed painting, building large model airplanes, as well as repairing watches, clocks, and radios. In their retirement, Del and Marie loved to frequent antique sales and auctions finding treasures ripe for restoration to former glory.
More than anything however, Delmar loved being with his family. He also loved being outdoors and the two made a great combination. He loved golf, archery, fishing, and baseball; and he shared that enthusiasm with his family. Whether it was taking kids fishing and camping, out on the houseboat, to the golf course, or to a baseball game, something was always happening at the Harris’s. There were also Sunday dinners, football, and family gatherings culminating with the traditional Christmas Eve gathering with the house filled to capacity. These activities and traditions, which continue through the present day, have taken root in the homes of his children and grandchildren.
Delmar is survived by his children, Carol Becker (Joseph), Susan Jahimiak (Steve), Peggy Vaughan (Rick), Richard Harris, Robert Harris (Ann), John Harris (Susan), and Thomas Harris (Elizabeth); his grandchildren, Anthony Christoph (Shelly), Eric Schueler, Ryan Harris, Dr. Joel Jahimiak (Dr. Emily), Krista Jahimiak, Nicholas Wiplinger (Heidi), Tera Wiplinger, Michael Harris, Kaitlin Harris, Dylan Harris, Aubrey Harris, and Aidan Harris; his great-grandchildren, Paige Christoph, Luke Christoph, Audun Schueler, Cora Jahimiak, Brooke Jahimiak, Whitney Jahimiak, Shana Sayward, Alex Kastenholz, Peyton Wiplinger, Carter Wiplinger, and Reilly Wiplinger. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Eugene Jorgenson (Marilyn); nieces, Sherri Sinniger (Mueller) and Lisa Mueller; and his great nephews, Joe Sinniger, Tim Sinniger, and Connor Johnson.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Harris and Cora Harris Kallenbach; his grandparents, Earl and Anna Harris; his beloved wife of over sixty years, Marie Harris (Jorgenson); his beautiful daughter, Kathleen Harris; his sister, Shirley Mueller (Kallenbach); and brother-in-law, Robert Mueller.
