Dean B. Dempsey, 88, of La Crosse, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. Dean was born in Fennimore, WI on November 21, 1929 to Theran and Shyrle (Bausman) Dempsey. He married Phyllis Becker on March 27, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Stitzer, WI. Dean graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville in 1952. He worked for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in La Crosse for 42 years as a Construction Project Engineer. His duties over the years included being Design Squad Leader, Design Supervisor, and Chief Design Engineer. Some of his more memorable projects included building of the La Crosse portion of I-90 during the 1960s, and construction of the dual bridges across the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien in the 1970s.
Dean was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating throughout his life. He was also a proficient golfer and was a long-time member of Maple Grove Country Club and the La Crosse Country Club.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis of 64 years, two sisters, Beverly Wartinbee and Andrea Cook, three brothers, Barry Dempsey, Max Dempsey, and Bruce Dempsey, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse on Wednesday, September 12th from 1:30 – 2:30 PM. Burial will follow in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park with Pastor Karen Bankes officiating.
