David William Schomberg, age 31, passed peacefully into the arms of Our Heavenly Father on June 9, 2021, shortly after recurrence of a brain tumor.
David was born in La Crosse, WI on October 4, 1989. He grew up on the family farm in Barre Mills, WI. He attended West Salem High School during which time he was part of the National Honor Society, the West Salem-Bangor Wrestling Team, and both concert and jazz band playing alto saxophone. In addition to being a straight-A student, David was given opportunities abroad to represent the Wisconsin State Band in a European tour and as an athlete for the Games Down Under in Australia for wrestling. He graduated from West Salem High School with the class of 2008.
David received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Mathematics and Physics. He was very active with the Navigators on campus and met many life-long friends while growing deeper in his faith. He was especially gifted at teaching and used this gift to tutor his peers. David completed a fifth year of college at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to obtain his third major in Electrical Engineering. He then started an internship with John Deere and was hired immediately following. Shortly after purchasing his first home in Illinois, he adopted his playful and boisterous Rottweiler Bernoulli. A couple of years later, he added to his family with his Swiss Mountain Dog Tesla, who he absolutely adored. He spent a total of seven years in the quad cities as an electrical engineer at John Deere, all the while continuing to make more lifelong friends and growing deeper in his faith.
In May of 2020, David made the decision to move back to La Crosse, WI to be closer to family and started an electrical engineering position for Trane Technologies. Aside from engineering, it was David’s desire to become more involved with the family farm alongside his cousin and friend Will Schomberg.
David had quite the fun side. Since his youth, he always carried a deck of cards with him. He was an avid collector and expert board game player of all kinds, having over 100 games in his personal collection. He attended and taught at national board game conventions. Friends always knew David as the ultimate movie and game night host. As a movie enthusiast, he attended many opening nights as well as the Star Wars Convention in Chicago. He was known to keep fireworks in his car at times, because you never know when those might come in handy. Campouts with cousins and friends were one of his favorite pastimes, with another being to playfully taunt his beloved dogs, Bernoulli and Tesla, with a laser pointer. Of all these things, perhaps one of the most renown is the unique formula that he began experimenting with in college: his quest for the perfect chocolate chip cookie. Dear friend Valerie Hastreiter recalls one particular version that received less than favorable reviews after David tried to convince his peers that mushrooms go with anything…needless to say it was not a success. He persevered and became known by all friends and family for his perfect chocolate chip cookie—a coveted recipe which he never shared.
