David H. Hansen, 91, of La Crosse, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Gundersen Health System of La Crosse. He was born in rural Desoto, Wis., on August 6, 1926 to Henry and Nora (Seymour) Hansen. He married Helga Poeppl on August 27, 1949 in Augsburg, Germany. Helga was the love of his life and together they celebrated 68 wonderful years together.
He attended a one room school house with other children from the area. Following his graduation from Lansing High School, he was drafted into the United States Army and attended basic training in Fort Knox KY. David loved military life and re-enlisted staying 24 more years. During his military career he was awarded many service medals and commendations. He was of the generation that firmly believed in love of God, family and country.
Following his military career, David and Helga settled in La Crosse where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, photography and woodworking. Other activities that he loved were watching F1 and Indy racing, cross country skiing, bowling and listening to classic country music. Traveling to the national parks out West and visiting his daughter in North Carolina were also favorite pastimes.
Many people may remember him managing the camera department at K-Mart for 18 years where he would greet people with his pleasant personality and sound advice.
In addition to his wife Helga, he is survived by his daughters Diana Hutchings of La Crosse and Linda (Gary) Spangler of Wilmington, NC., grandsons Brian (Jessica) Hutchings of Milwaukee, Wis., Cameron Spangler of Wilmington, and great grandchildren Tristan and Lorelei Hutchings. He is further survived by one brother Roger (Anita) Hansen of La Crosse, one sister Ruth Uglum of rural Ferryville, his sister in law Judy Hansen and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Myles and one brother in law Alec Uglum.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eagle Crest South including the nurses, dining room helpers, housekeepers and people in Maintenance who helped him stay healthy and safe. David is definitely up in Heaven teaching Jesus how to catch a few more fish.
