Darryl W. Berny, 80, of La Crosse, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Gundersen Heath System in La Crosse.
Darryl was born on June 30, 1937, in La Crosse to Lawrence and Blanche (Secor) Berny. He attended La Crosse schools and was a 1955 graduate of La Crosse Central High School. He married his soulmate and love of his life, Marilyn (Jarrett) Becker, on June 14, 1980, in La Crosse. Darryl was previously married to the former Edna Riner and to this union was born three children, Joyce, Howard and Scott. Upon marrying Marilyn, Darryl gained three more children, Tom, Chris and Jerry.
After graduating high school, Darryl served in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserves for a total of ten years. He was employed by the Trane Company from 1960 until his retirement in October of 1997. He was a member of the Trane Company 25-Year Club and Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent. Darryl was an avid hunter and also enjoyed golf and fishing, but the one hobby he enjoyed doing the most in his free time was simply cutting wood on his land.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Joyce Gallaher of Onalaska, Howard (Debra) Berny of South St. Paul, Minn., Scott Berny of Janesville, Wis., Tom (Kelly) Becker of La Crosse, Chris (Mike) Bakalars of La Crosse, and Jerry Becker of La Crosse; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren with two more due to arrive shortly; and the greatest friends and travel companions anyone could ask for, Kenny and Marilyn Grosskopf. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Arlene Sanford and Evelyn Berny.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 16 th , at English Lutheran Church, 1509 King St., La Crosse. Rev. Becky Goche will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Coulee Region Humane Society.
The family wishes to thank the staff on the Critical Care Unit at Gundersen Health System for the wonderful care given to Darryl with special thanks to Dr. Kahn, Brandi, Casey and Andrew.
