Darrel L. Voss, age 85, of Dakota, MN was born on September 16, 1936 and passed away peacefully in his home on December 25, 2021. Darrel was born and raised on the family farm high on a ridge north of Nodine, MN, which overlooked the Mississippi River bluffs and valleys. Today the land on which Darrel grew up is now part of the Great River Bluffs State Park.
Darrel was a hardworking and humble man who was always willing to help a neighbor, friend, or family member. No request was too small or too large. In his early years he purchased a milk truck and had a route in the Nodine/Dakota area, delivering milk to the creamery in Nodine. He later worked for Fiberite, Inc. in Winona, MN where he retired after 33 years of service. He was a very skilled euchre player and it was always wise to be his partner rather than his opponent. From his early days on the farm, Darrel had a lifelong passion for tractors and enjoyed helping a local farmer haul corn during the harvest season.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Irene (Papenfuss) Voss, sister Lorna Schossow, daughter Lorna Bokor, wives Judy (Roraff) Voss and Joan (Rustad) Voss, son-in-law Jerry Olafson, and niece Becky Schossow.
Darrel is survived by his children Brenda (Arlyn) Mades of Dakota, MN, Kerry Olafson of Dakota, MN, Douglas Voss of Waterford, WI, David Voss of Rochester, MN, and Russell (Maggie) Voss of French Island, WI, and two step-daughters, Judy (William) Rustad Papenfuss of Houston, MN and Anita (Steven) Rustad Laking of Eagle River, WI. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, “man’s best friend” Sid, and Dianne Heroux and Holly Delp who had a very special friendship with him.
The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to the Gundersen Hospice Team and to all of his Dakota neighbors and friends who checked on and helped Darrel so he could remain in his home.
