Daniel J. Peabody

September 26, 1999 — September 23, 2023

Daniel James Peabody, age 23, passed away on September 23, 2023, into the loving arms of his Savior. He left behind a legacy of love and joy that touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Maplewood, Minnesota, Daniel spent his early years in White Bear Lake before returning to Maplewood, where he formed friendships that stayed with him his whole life.

During his high school years, Daniel’s family had the adventure of moving to Shanghai, China. Over the course of those two years, Daniel attended an international school, traveled in the Gobi Desert on camel, immersed himself in a new culture, and went on a missions trip to South Africa where he witnessed the power and love of Jesus. His worldview and growing heart of compassion and faith were expanding.

During his time at Wheaton College in Illinois, Daniel dedicated himself not only to his studies in business and pre-med but also to a weekly ministry where he volunteered with adults with special needs. He had the ability to see the innate worth and dignity of every individual. Upon graduation in the spring of 2022, he ventured to Denver, Colorado, where he worked as an actuarial consultant. It was not uncommon for Daniel to extend a helping hand, provide food to the homeless, make friendships with complete strangers, or enjoy being with the elderly, whom he held in high regard. He had a special place in his heart for what some might consider "the least of these," He often served Jesus by living out His words "As you have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto me."  It was the manner in which Daniel helped that was the most remarkable. As he'd give food to a homeless man, he would talk with him as if they were old buddies.

In May of 2023, Daniel married the love of his life, Ashley McWhorter, whom he had met at Wheaton on his 20th birthday and dated nearly 3 years. Their mutual sense of humor was a spark that gave them both great enjoyment in each other. In July, they embarked on a new chapter in Galveston, Texas, where Ashley pursued her dreams in medical school and Daniel started a new job using behavioral therapy with autistic children. Ashley was Daniel’s favorite person, and Daniel was Ashley’s cornerstone. Daniel brought joy and fulfillment to Ashley’s world that she had never imagined was possible.

Daniel's light shone brightest in the ordinary moments of life. His quick wit, zest for life, and love for his wife, his family and his friends were hallmarks of his character. His authenticity and genuine faith in Jesus inspired those around him, and his passion for traditions created many funny and special memories for his family and friends.

Daniel was a master storyteller, captivating us all with his tales of adventure and humor. His ability to find joy in the simplest of things was infectious, reminding us to appreciate the beauty in life's littlest moments.

Though Daniel's time with us was tragically brief, the impact he made on our hearts will outlive us all. There will never be another Daniel James Peabody. He was one-of-a-kind, in every way. Our deep grief is a testimony to our deep loss.

Daniel is preceded in death by "Auntie Becky" (Rebecca Hart), Great Grandparents Russell and Delphine Larson, Herman and Lorraine Kehl, Raynold and Ruth Nelson, and Thomas Frederick and Maecile McDowell.   It brings us comfort that Daniel will be laid to rest near his "Grandpa and Grandma McDowell" as they shared a special bond together.

Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Ashley, his proud parents, Mark and Joy, and his siblings, whom he enjoyed so much: Andrew, Jonathan, Tzipi, Anna, Joshua, “Cousin” Carrie, Sarah, and Emma. He was a loving grandson to David and Janice Nelson and Joel and Beverly Peabody. Daniel also leaves behind a close-knit circle of cousins, aunts, and uncles, and a wide net of friends, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Daniel loved well and was well loved.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northern Pines of Minnesota (npines.org), a Christian family camp which was Daniel’s favorite and most meaningful place to spend each summer (as both a camper and counselor).

A memorial service to celebrate Daniel’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 11 at First Evangelical Free Church in Maplewood, MN.
